Semiochemicals |
| |
Insects exude chemicals commonly referred to as pheromones for the purpose of attracting the opposite sex. These semiochemicals are natural and are insect specific. Today, industries manufacture chemicals which mimic the action of these chemicals and use them as an alternative to chemical pesticides. A number of companies and independent inventors have researched extensively in this area. Find out more... |

Biocatalysts for conversion of carbon dioxide into fuels |
| |
Global dependence on petroleum has resulted in two major problems - Depletion of petroleum reserves and global warming. Scientists are therefore engaged in massive research programs to convert carbon dioxide into fuels. An option that is being considered is the use of enzymes also known as biocatalysts to derive efficient fuels which could be an alternative to petroleum itself. In this patent tracker, SciTech brings out an overview of patents in this area till January 2010. SciTech has used key words and patent classification codes for this study. Find out more... |

Advances in Paper Drying |
| |
Paper drying is an important step in the Paper Manufacturing Process. Most of the energy in the paper machine is consumed in the paper dryer. Paper drying can be performed by the conventional cylinder drying technique, or by recent techniques like microwave or IR drying. The objective of the drying process is to make the moisture content of the sheet equal to the relative humidity of air. For conventional steam heated cylinders, the predominant mechanism of heat transfer is conduction. Convection is for impingement dryers. Infrared heating utilizes radiation. The report includes a study of the patenting activity of various companies, researchers and educational institutions involved in the area of paper drying during 2004 - 2009. Find out more... |

Patenting trends in Algae based Biofuels |
| |
The escalating concerns on global climate change and the rising cost of petroleum based
energy are driving governments around the world to promote the use of alternate energy
sources in order to reduce air pollution and the dependence on imported fossil fuels.
Biofuel feedstocks are associated with several environmental, economic and humanitarian
aspects. A sustainable biofuels industry needs to rely on non-food crops such as cellulosic
feedstocks for large scale production and the resultant low biofuel yields are the major
obstacles for commercialization of these technologies. Find out more...

Summary of Technological Innovations in Green Buildings via Patent Analytics |
| |
The technologies encompassing “green buildings (GB)” is disclosed in 200 highly relevant patents till date. About 50% of these documents focus on materials and the rest relate to Energy systems, Designs and Integrated systems. The technical solutions disclosed point towards developing (i) resistant materials (water, chemical, heat and abrasion), (ii) protective coatings, (iii) materials that are light in weight bearing high strength, (iv) materials that can be manufactured at low cost and so on. The analysis lead to identifying white spaces (gaps). Find out more. |

Patenting trends in Kinetic Energy Harvesting |
| |
Energy generation from alternative sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, biofuel, biomass, tidal wave etc. are associated with high installation and maintenance costs. Kinetic Energy Harvesting (KEH) on the other hand captures minute amounts of energy from sources such as human or animal actions and weight/vibration of moving vehicles for energy generation. This technology uses dynamos, piezoelectric devices, Pressure plates, Springs etc. for energy generation. The technologies associated with KEH are cost-effective, ecofriendly and utilize simple apparatus. Find out more. |

Pervaporation |
| |
Pervaporation (PVP), a promising separation method, is an energy efficient way of separating liquid mixtures that form azeotropes with components of low relative volatilities and difficult to separate by conventional methods. PVP offers advantages over conventional techniques in terms of being less energy intensive and enabling modular configuration. PVP applications include removal of water from organics or vice versa and separation of organic/organic systems. Find out more. |

Patenting trends in Edible Packaging |
| |
While edible packaging does reduce the burden on environment and brings down the costs arising out of recycling or reuse, it still has to meet expectations of the consumers in terms of appearance, taste, freshness shelf-life as well as receive regulatory approval. The most widely known applications of edible packaging are food wraps and casings. Find out more. |

Patenting trends in Single Electron Transistor |
| |
The single electron transistor (SET) is a type of switching device that uses controlled electron tunneling to amplify current. A SET is made from two tunnel junctions that share a common electrode. A tunnel junction consists of two pieces of metal separated by a very thin (~1 nm) insulator. The only way for electrons in one of the metal electrodes to travel to the other electrode is to tunnel through the insulator. Since tunneling is a discrete process, the electric charge that flows through the tunnel junction flows in multiples of e, the charge of a single electron. Applications of SET include nanoelectronics, GSI applications and low power applications. Find out more. |
